Ninety seconds is all you need to engage a group at the beginning of a training session. However you must use those ninety seconds well.
Coming from a public speaking background I [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] learnt very early the importance of hooking in an audience from the outset. A training session is clearly not quite the same as a speech or presentation, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] but the same principle holds true. And in the training room this often gets overlooked.
We assume that as we are going to be in the room all day and we assume everyone knows [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] why they are there. Therefore there seems to be no [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] sense of urgency as we slowly drift into the training programme. And yet we must never forget those three principle questions are also at the back of every trainees mind:
'Why am I here?' 'What am I going to get out of this?' 'Why am I listening to you?'
And the sooner those questions are answered the better. It only takes ninety seconds!
First we need to give a very simple, broad overview of the aims and desired outcomes of the training (not for the trainer, but from the student's point of view).
So phrases like:
'Today we are going to cover XXX, and the aim is by the end of the day you will [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] be able to do YYY better, or solve ZZZ' (ie we need to paint a picture of a desired outcome - something that makes the student think - 'Yes, I would like that').
Most students go to training in order to learn or [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] improve, or for help to deal with situations that are challenging for them. Therefore if the student is taking time out of a busy life to attend a training session, it will greatly reassure if he or she gets a picture at the beginning of how the next few hours will benefit, in a very specific way.
Secondly the student needs to know a little bit about why You (the trainer) are qualified or ideally positioned to help achieve that specific outcome that you have described.
Do you have the knowledge? Do you have experience? [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Do you understand my point of view?
(You may be able to paint a picture of an outcome that I would like to achieve, but now I need to be reassured that you are able to able to help me achieve it!).
And thirdly - give a very simple overview of the structure of the day (typically breaking the training down into three simple headings).
This now means that I, as a student, know what I will be able to achieve; I am reassured that you can help me achieve it [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] and now I have a broad idea of how we are going to get there together.
And it only takes ninety seconds.
Let the training begin!
