In 1909. inventor Abbot Low registered a patent for a 'waste [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] paper receptacle' that was meant to offer a better way of disposing of unwanted paper. The machine was never manufactured, so no one can say whether it was useful or not. Skip forward to Nazi Germany, 1935, in the home of Adolf Ehinger. The conjecture is Mr. Ehinger printed a rather large amount of anti-Nazi propaganda and needed to rid himself [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] of it rather [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] quickly. As he sat at his kitchen table pondering the problem he spied the pasta maker and a brilliant idea occurred to him.
Mr. Ehinger was ridiculed for his invention as people viewed it as pointless. Eventually he converted the pasta maker from manual to electric by attaching a small motor and marketed it to banks but never managed to gain a patent for the machine. During the 1940's he sold many machines to government agencies and embassies and in 1959 his company manufactured the first cross-cut paper shredder. Mr. Ehinger's company is still in business today, under the name EBA Krug & Priester GmbH & Co.
Up until the mid-1980's it was uncommon for private citizens to shred their documents. Only government agencies and, occasionally, financial institutions used paper shredders. However in 1984 the US Supreme [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Court ruled that search and seizure of garbage left for collection outside of a residence was not a violation of the Fourth Amendment. Concerns about privacy and identity threat began to arise. The media has played a major role in raising awareness with the public about information theft.
Many sizes and varieties of paper shredders are now available on the market. Large industrial shredder trucks can dispose of [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] up to 8000 pounds of paper per [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] hour and store 6000 to 15000 pounds of [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] shredded material. The most common type of shredder is [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] the bin mounted model. It fits over a standard size waste paper basket and shreds documents directly into the basket. Hand-held 'wand' type shredders are great for those who travel for their work and often need to shred documents. They generally can only handle one or two pieces of paper at time, but are very convenient.
There are eight types of shredders used today. The strip-cut shredder is the least secure as it uses rotating knives to cut long narrow strips. The strips can be pieced together, with a lot of patience. Cross-cut shredders use two rotating sets of drums to cut up the paper, creating confetti. Particle-cut shredders create tiny square confetti. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Cardboard shredders are designed to be used only for corrugated cardboard and cut it into strips. Granulators cut the paper randomly until the pieces are small enough to fall through a fine mesh. Hammermills hammer the paper through a screen and Grinders use a rotating shaft with blades to grind the paper through a screen. Pierce and Tear shredders do as the name implies, pierce and tear through [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] the paper until it is in tiny bits.
The discussion of paper shredding inevitably leads to the question of [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] disposal. What happens to the masses of confetti created in the commercial shredding industry? The answer is in many of the products we use on a daily basis. Using paper making methods, the shredded material is made into a molded pulp and made into take-out drink trays, clamshell containers, egg cartons, fruit trays and other sustainable packaging.
Paper shredders have a significant place in history. They have been associated with several major political scandals that changed the way we interpret the phrase 'cover up'. For example, Colonel Oliver North testified that he used a Schleicher Intimus 007S cross cut shredder to dispose of Iran-Contra documents. It has been reported that the Nixon re-election [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] committee used a Fellows paper shredder to dispose of documents during the Watergate scandal in 1979. Now we are shredding more than just paper. Floppy disks, DVD's, CD's and microfilm are shredded as well. Thanks to Mr. Ehinger's pasta maker and the fear of identity theft, the shredder is here to stay.
